Warri Wolves

The state-owned football project in Delta State began life as NPA FC, a side run for the Nigeria Ports Authority, before the Delta State Government took it over and renamed it Warri Wolves in 2003. Founded in 1998, the club has since operated under the Delta State Sports Council, which has kept it afloat through a period based in Lagos and, later, a return home.

Promotion, not silverware, has defined the club's better years. Warri Wolves have never lifted the Nigeria Federation Cup or the top-flight NPFL title, coming closest in the 2013 Federation Cup final, where Enyimba beat them on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The nearest thing to a signature triumph came this year, when the Wolves won the Nigeria National League Super 8, beating Wikki Tourists 3-2 to secure a return to the NPFL.

Anthony Ujah passed through the squad in 2008-2009, and Peter Etebo did the same a few years later. Locally, the fixture that matters is against Delta Force, the other club owned by the state government.

Warri Wolves still play at the Warri Township Stadium, a 20,000-capacity ground that by 2024 had fallen into disrepair, with rehabilitation plans put to the state governor. Supporters know the club as the Seasiders, a nod to the city's place on the Niger Delta coast that the team's colours of blue and yellow have carried through every relegation and return.
