AVL (Austria) 2025/26

The Austrian Volley League (Österreichische Volleyball Bundesliga, ÖVL) stands as the premier professional volleyball competition in Austria. Operating at the apex of the national pyramid, it is governed by the Austrian Volleyball Federation (ÖVV). The league traces its origins to 1952, beginning as the Vienna Championship before expanding into a national format in 1972.

The current men's structure features ten clubs. During the regular season, teams engage in a single round-robin schedule, playing each opponent once for a total of eighteen matches. This phase determines progression to the playoff stage, where quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals are contested as best-of series to crown the champion. Relegation is decided through a specific round involving the lowest-placed teams, who battle to avoid dropping to the 2. Bundesliga.

A defining characteristic of the Austrian system is the dual-competition model for elite clubs. Teams such as Hypo Tirol Innsbruck and Aich/Dob participate in the domestic ÖVL while simultaneously competing in the MEVZA League. This multinational regional league includes clubs from Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovakia, creating a distinct sporting environment compared to standalone structures in neighbouring countries.

Historical dominance has been shared between Hotvolleys Vienna, with eighteen titles, and Hypo Tirol Innsbruck, who hold twelve. Hypo Tirol Innsbruck entered the 2023–24 season as the reigning champion.

Separately, the women's league operates under the Austrian Volley League Women banner. Founded in 1953, it has been organized independently by the women's league association since 2002. VB NÖ Sokol/Post dominates this tier, holding a record forty-seven titles as of 2025. They secured the 2024–25 championship, maintaining their position at the top of the women's game.
