The Austrian Women's Volleyball Bundesliga, operating under the name AVL, stands as the premier tier for female volleyball in Austria. While the national championship traces its lineage back to 1953, the modern structure of the league was formalised in 2002. Since January 2022, commercial and media rights have been handled by the Austrian Volleyball League (ÖVL), an independent body created to manage the sport's marketing. This arrangement allows clubs greater autonomy over their commercial assets, a shift that distinguishes the current era from previous decades of direct federation control.
Competition unfolds across two distinct phases. The regular season, or Grunddurchgang, employs a double round-robin system where every side faces each other twice, once at home and once away. Points accumulated during this period determine progression. The upper echelon of the table enters the Master Play-offs, contesting the title through a series of knockout rounds. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are decided by the best of five sets, while the championship decider extends to seven. The lower portion of the standings reverts to the Hoffnungsrunde, or hope round, where the final two positions challenge for survival against teams from the second division in relegation playoffs.
Dominance in the title race has historically centred on Vienna. The entity known as VB NÖ Sokol/Post, previously identified as Post SV Wien and SVS Post, has claimed the championship 46 times, establishing it as the most decorated club in the competition's history. More recently, ASKÖ Linz-Steg secured four successive titles between 2019 and 2023, breaking the Vienna monopoly before the defending champions emerged in the 2024–25 campaign. The league currently fields ten teams, balancing tradition with a restructuring that prioritises professional independence.
