Como beat RB Leipzig 4:1 in the opening match of the Champions League League Stage on Wednesday night at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. The hosts took an early lead through Martin Baturina, who found the net in the 15th minute, and never looked back. Leipzig pulled one back through Andrija Maksimović before the break, but four goals from Como sealed the result.
Baturina opened the scoring just after a quarter of an hour, and Douvikas doubled the advantage before half-time. Diaoune added a third in the 54th minute, and Maksimović responded for Leipzig in the 58th. Perrone completed the scoring on the stroke of full-time, catching Leipzig off guard.
Leipzig made three changes at the break, bringing on Seiwald, Guiu and Nkunku in an attempt to stabilise. The substitutions didn't quite work, and Como were running out of games in terms of patience. They kept pressing, and the fourth goal came as a consequence of that pressure.
The statistics tell an interesting story. Both sides held 50 per cent possession, but Como created seven big chances compared to Leipzig's two. They also registered a higher expected goals figure of 2.3 against 1.42. Shots were even at 12 each, though Como were more accurate with six on target to Leipzig's four.
Both teams remain winless in the new format, sitting 22nd and 23rd respectively with zero points after one match. The result follows Como's 4:1 victory over Genoa earlier this month, while Leipzig's form has been more mixed, including a heavy defeat to Werder Bremen.
