Emmen edged past Roda 1-0 in the opening round of the Eerste Divisie regular season on Friday evening. The hosts held firm after Freddy Quispel struck in the 68th minute to settle matters. It was a narrow win that kept Emmen's upward trajectory intact.
By then they had already weathered a spell of pressure. Roda moved the ball well but could not find the decisive pass in the final third. Quispel's finish was clinical enough, though the build-up had been messy. And here's the thing — the goal came after Roda had pushed forward, leaving space behind.
The match grew tighter as the minutes ticked on. L. Everink picked up a caution in the 38th minute, then Y. Dede-Lhomme followed in the 49th. S. Veldhuis went off on 75 minutes after his yellow, and A. Hojabrpour was booked late on. Roda made changes at 46, 65, 74, 78, 82 and 86 minutes as they searched for an equaliser.
The numbers told a different story than the result suggested. Emmen held 44 per cent possession but managed seven shots on target to Roda's four. They completed 282 passes against 363 for the visitors, yet the accuracy rate was higher at 0.47 compared to 0.44. Roda had more attacks — 32 to 29 — but could not convert them.
The three points moved Emmen further clear at third place with 12 points from five games. Roda remained in ninth on eight points after two wins and two draws. Emmen had won four of their last five league matches before this result.
