Yenisey and Tekstilshchik played out a goalless draw in the First League on Saturday evening. The result leaves the hosts 12th with nine points from five matches, while the visitors remain 16th with six points. It was a match decided by discipline rather than ambition.
By then, the pattern was already set. Around the twentieth minute, when neither side had yet threatened, you could see both managers keeping their players tight. Pershin picked up a yellow card for Yenisey just before the half-hour mark, and Ogienko followed suit for the visitors. The game refused to open up, and neither manager took risks.
The hosts had 60 per cent of possession and registered 18 shots compared to four from Tekstilshchik. But nine shots off target and only one on target for the visitors tells you the story. Yenisey controlled territory but could not find a way through. Things came to a head in the final minutes when three yellow cards fell within four minutes of stoppage time.
Both sides made three substitutions each, with Korneev, Filev and Chukanov coming on for Yenisey while Simonov, Ishchenko and Ogienko were brought to the pitch for the visitors. The changes did not alter the balance. The deeper squad argument means nothing when neither side had the energy to test the other.
The draw extends Yenisey's unbeaten run to four matches now, though only one of those was a win. Tekstilshchik have not won since their opening day and sit six points from safety. Ten yellow cards between them suggest both teams were prepared for a battle they expected to lose nothing from.
