Match report

Fenerbahçe and Roma Share Points in UEFA Champions League Opener

Fenerbahçe played Roma to a 1-1 draw in the first match of the new Champions League League Stage. The result keeps both sides level in the table at zero points after one game. Archie Brown equalised for the hosts after Bryan Cristante had given Roma the lead, and that was enough to keep the points shared.

Cristante fired Roma ahead in the thirty-ninth minute, and the visitors looked comfortable until Brown pulled one back seventy seconds after the break. That forty-eighth-minute goal came quickly, and it changed the shape of the match. Fenerbahçe paid for a sloppy opening but found a way back into it.

There was a moment at sixty-nine minutes when Paulo Dybala was denied a penalty after a VAR check, and Roma turned to the kids to make changes. Gianluca Mancini and Devyne Rensch were among those shuffled. The penalty decision was cancelled, but the hosts had nothing to do all evening after that.

Fenerbahçe had more shots and more expected goals, yet the numbers tell only part of the story. They took five shots on target to Roma's three, and their expected goals sat at 1.64 against the visitors' 0.53. Big chances created were three for Fenerbahçe and one for Roma. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging.

Roma kept possession more comfortably, fifty-eight per cent to forty-two, and passed the ball into the opposition half 382 times compared to Fenerbahçe's 148. But possession without penetration is just passing with purpose. The visitors created fewer chances and had to settle for a point.

Yellow cards came thick and fast in the second half. Archie Brown, Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Mert Müldür and Ismail Yüksek all went to the referee for Fenerbahçe, while Devyne Rensch and Bryan Cristante collected theirs for Roma. The match turned physical, and both managers saw the game out.

Both sides are now in twentieth and seventeenth place respectively, but that table says nothing yet. The season has just started. What matters is that Fenerbahçe took a point from Roma at home, and Roma avoided a defeat away. The rest will follow.

The scoreline reflects a balanced encounter. Fenerbahçe's home advantage was real, and Roma's experience showed when it counted. Three or four moments decided this, and the rest was noise. That is how these matches are won.

This is the first match of the new format. Points are points, and the gap between teams is still wide. Fenerbahçe and Roma have both seen the game out without losing. What happens next will tell you more than this result.
