Alavés refused to go away and found their equaliser through Mikel Rodriguez in the 84th minute. The hosts made several changes down the stretch — Iñigo Palazon came on in the 17th minute, while Alavés brought on Pablo Fernández and Fran Pérez together in the 55th minute. By then, the game had settled into a rhythm neither side could quite break.
The statistics tell a different story from the scoreline. Alavés created four big chances and registered an expected goals figure of 2.0, yet managed only one goal. Rayo, with just 0.42 expected goals, took their one clear chance to score. The hosts had 48 per cent possession and 323 total passes compared to Alavés's 340, but it was the visitors who pushed more into the final third with 76 passes compared to 55. Shots accuracy favoured Rayo at 38 per cent against 20 per cent, but neither side could convert their superiority into more than a single point.
For Rayo, this draw does little to ease the pressure after defeats against Sevilla and Ipswich earlier in the month. They have now lost two of their last three competitive matches, with only a 3-2 win over Charleroi offering any respite. Alavés, meanwhile, have now gone unbeaten in four of their last five outings, including victories over Getafe and Castellón, and a win against Girona. The draw extended that unbeaten run to five games.
And here's the thing — this was not a match decided by sustained dominance from either side. It was decided by moments, and both teams had their share. The hosts had the early frustration of two cancelled goals, while the visitors squandered their chances in the second half.
