It was a commanding start, by then, for a side that had shown flashes of inconsistency in recent months.
Chery opened the scoring in the thirteenth minute, and the momentum never really shifted after that. The visitors had more attacks — 109 to 99 — but shot accuracy sat at 0.42 for them against 0.4 for Violet, and it hardly mattered. Defence Force had nothing to do all evening after the first half, and the old head settled them down only in fragments.

But five shots on target for the visitors produced nothing, while six found the back of the net for Violet. Chances went begging for one side, were taken for the other.
Violet's recent form had been mixed — a 0-1 loss to Juventus and a 1-0 win over Racing Club Etienne among their last five results — but this performance ended a barren spell. Defence Force, meanwhile, had been on a run of 2-0 and 6-0 victories before this, and now they had hit a wall.
The result puts Violet top of Group Stage one on three points, with a goal difference of plus three. Defence Force sit on zero, and the line has barely moved in terms of what this group might become. Three points from one match, but the weight of what it signals is already there.
