Heracles took the lead through a penalty taken by T. van Gilst in the thirty-eighth minute, after C. Abbas had been booked for VVV-Venlo eleven minutes earlier. D. Vicente doubled the advantage just before half-time, slotting home in the forty-fifth minute. VVV-Venlo responded with urgency after the break, though they had already seen E. Zuliani cautioned in the forty-third minute.
J. N'djoli pulled one back for the visitors in the seventy-first minute, but D. Zandbergen equalised for VVV-Venlo seven minutes later. The home side then took the lead when Zandbergen struck again in the eighty-third minute, only for D. Hendrix to restore parity four minutes on. By then the match had become something of a sprint, with both sides trading blows.
J. N'djoli completed his brace from the penalty spot in the eighty-eighth minute, sending Heracles through to victory. VVV-Venlo made several changes throughout, bringing on M. Odriss, L. de Blok and T. van Gilst among others, but could not find a response. M. te Wierik received a yellow card in added time as the match wound down.
Heracles dominated the statistics, recording 101 attacks compared to 68 for VVV-Venlo, and registered eight shots on target against three. Both sides held 50 percent possession, though the visitors were more clinical with 35 percent accuracy. VVV-Venlo managed 300 successful passes to 302 for the away side, but the difference lay in the final third.
The result means Heracles remain unbeaten at the summit with 15 points, while VVV-Venlo sit seventh on nine points after three victories and two defeats.
