About the player
Twenty-four goals in 74 league matches for Norwich City and it was that spell that carried him to FC Porto in 2025 for a fee reported between €13.3 million and €16.5 million. Norwich kept a 20% share of any future profit on him.
The route there ran through three countries. Sainz started at Lagun Artea, his local club in Leioa, and joined the Athletic Bilbao academy at Lezama in 2012. He spent five years there and left in 2017 without a senior appearance.
Deportivo Alavés took him next, first into the reserve side, where he scored six goals in 24 matches across the Tercera División and Segunda División B. He was handed a debut in La Liga in August 2019 and went on to make 40 league appearances for the first team, scoring twice. A season on loan at Real Zaragoza in the Segunda División brought three goals in 32 matches.
Alavés were relegated, and Sainz left on a free transfer to Giresunspor in Turkey. Nine goals in 32 league games. Another free transfer took him to Norwich in 2023, where the numbers climbed again.
He played five times for Spain at under-19 level between 2019 and 2020, scoring three goals. He arrived at Porto without a senior honour to his name.
