About the player
George Maris came through the Barnsley academy, signing his first professional contract in May 2014, and he made just three senior appearances before loan spells took him around the lower leagues, including stints at Nuneaton Town, Guiseley and Lincoln City, where he scored twice in 13 games.
The move that shaped his career came in June 2016, when he joined Cambridge United on a free transfer. Over four seasons he made 150 appearances in all competitions and scored 22 goals. A strike against Oldham Athletic in November 2018 was nominated for the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month.
On 28 July 2020, Maris signed for Mansfield Town on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee. He has since passed 180 league appearances and 23 goals. The high point arrived in the 2023–24 season, when Mansfield won the EFL League Two play-offs to secure promotion to League One.
He has not been capped by England at any level, senior or youth.
