About the player
Joe Rothwell came through Manchester United's academy but never made a senior appearance for the club, instead playing on loan at Blackpool and then Barnsley. When United let him go, Oxford United picked him up on a free transfer, and he made 69 league appearances, finishing on the losing side in an EFL Trophy final.
A move to Blackburn Rovers in 2018 gave Rothwell his longest spell at one club, four seasons in which he made 149 league appearances and scored 10 goals in central midfield. That form earned him a free transfer to AFC Bournemouth in 2022, though loan spells took him elsewhere for spells of first-team football: to Southampton, where he scored against Huddersfield Town, and then to Leeds United. Leeds won the Championship title in 2024–25, finishing top of the table with 100 points.
Rothwell left Bournemouth for Rangers in the summer of 2025 on a three-year deal, but his time in Glasgow was brief. After eight league appearances, he moved on again in February 2026, signing an 18-month contract with Sheffield United. Rothwell also represented England at youth level, turning out for the U16, U17, U19 and U20 sides.
