About the player
Sterner's career has been shaped by Holstein Kiel, who raised him from academy football through to his senior debut in 2020, and he spent four seasons in the first team, racking up 36 second-division appearances and three goals before Kiel sent him out on loan to Dynamo Dresden in August 2024.
That loan turned into the defining year of his career so far. Sterner made 32 league appearances and scored twice as Dynamo Dresden won the 3. Liga title and went up to the 2.
The following summer, Kiel cashed in and sold him permanently to Hannover 96 for a fee of around €400,000, with Sterner signing through to 2028. He made just one competitive appearance for Hannover before being loaned straight back to Dynamo Dresden in January 2026 for the rest of that season. He went on to make 17 league appearances in that second spell, and Dresden made the switch permanent that June, paying Hannover a fee reported at around €400,000, though other reports put the figure somewhat lower.
Sterner has continued to contribute going forward as well as at the back, scoring in the DFB-Pokal against SV Darmstadt 98 during the 2025–26 season.
