About the player
Julius Paananen worked his way through Oulu's youth system, moving from OrPa to OTP before joining the AC Oulu academy, and signed his first professional contract with the club on 18 June 2023, aged just 16. He made his Veikkausliiga debut for AC Oulu on 6 October 2023 against Ilves.
His first senior goal came much later, in the Finnish Cup against PonnPa on 16 April 2025, and he opened his account in the league ten days after that, netting in the 17th minute of a 1–4 home defeat to Inter Turku. Paananen has since committed his future to the club, with a contract running to the end of 2028.
He has represented Finland at every youth level from U17 to U21, scoring twice in five caps for the U17s and adding two more goals in a pair of U19 appearances. In 2023 he was named the Finnish FA's Northern Finland Boy Player of the Year, a season that also brought silver at the Finnish Youth Championship with AC Oulu/OLS's U17 side and promotion from Kakkonen to Ykkönen with the reserve team, who went on to finish third in Ykkönen the following year.
