About the player
Martijn Kaars came through Ajax's academy, where he won the Dutch U19 title in 2017, but never made a senior appearance for the club and left without breaking into the first team. He went back to where he started, FC Volendam, first with the reserves in the Derde Divisie before earning a place in the senior side, where he scored 27 goals in 103 league appearances and helped the club reach the Eredivisie.
A free move to Helmond Sport reshaped his career. Kaars was the division's top scorer for two seasons running, with 35 goals in 75 league matches, numbers that persuaded 1. FC Magdeburg to sign him for around €800,000. In his single season in Germany's second tier he scored 19 league goals, finishing second in the scoring charts behind Davie Selke.
That form took him to FC St. Pauli in August 2025. Reports put the fee at around €4 million, though the clubs did not confirm the amount. At youth level, Kaars was capped by the Netherlands at U15 and U18, but a senior call-up has so far eluded him.
