About the player
Niklas Steffen's route to Swiss football's top flight ran through the lower leagues rather than a fast-tracked academy path. Formed at FC Solothurn before a brief spell in FC Basel's youth system, he spent four years with Basel's U21 side, making 12 appearances.
The breakthrough came through a swap deal: in April 2021, Steffen moved to Stade Lausanne Ouchy as part of an exchange that sent Jozef Pukaj back to Basel. He made 21 appearances there before leaving on a free transfer in July 2023 for FC Rapperswil-Jona, where he became a fixture in the Promotion League, playing 33 matches in the 2023–24 season.
That performance earned him a free move to FC Thun in June 2024. Thun went on to win the Swiss Super League in 2025–26, taking his tally for the club past 50 appearances along the way.
Steffen wears the number 1 shirt at Thun and plays with his right foot.
