About the player
Paul Papp made his name at defence long before Petrolul Ploiești. A move to FC Vaslui followed, and after a loan spell at Farul Constanța he made 74 league appearances. A switch to Chievo Verona followed in May 2012, a transfer valued at an estimated €1.5–2.5 million for 75% of his economic rights.
After a permanent move to Steaua in 2015, Papp returned to Romania in August 2020 as a free agent, joining Universitatea Craiova, where he added the Cupa României in 2020–21 and the Supercupa României in 2021 to his collection.
At international level, Papp was capped 20 times for Romania between 2011 and 2015 and scored three goals, including two against Northern Ireland in 2014. He was named FRF Defender of the Year in 2010 and was Man of the Match in the 2009–10 Romanian Cup Final.
