About the player
Van der Heyden's route to Gent ran through a loan spell that never brought him back to where it started. After a five-year contract at Mallorca signed in July 2023, he was sent out on loan to FC St. Pauli for the second half of the 2024–25 season. Gent made the move permanent on 25 July 2025, paying €2.0 million for a deal running to 2028.
The Belgian left-footer's career began far from the top flight. He came through the youth ranks at SK Denderhoutem and FCV Dender EH before joining the academies of Club Brugge and then Anderlecht. He turned professional instead with KV Oostende, making his debut in May 2017 and reaching the Belgian Cup final that same season.
A move to FC Eindhoven followed, then in July 2019 the transfer that shaped his career: Union SG. He was a key figure as the club won the Challenger Pro League in 2020–21 and returned to Belgium's top flight, then finished as runners-up in the First Division A the following season.
