So Kawahara

So Kawahara made his senior debut only after finishing his studies: he spent his university years at Fukuoka University before turning professional with Roasso Kumamoto in 2020 on a free transfer. It was at Sagan Tosu, however, that he built his reputation. In 2023 he was the only outfield player in the entire J1 League to play every single minute of the season — 34 matches, 3,060 minutes without a single substitution against his name. That relentless availability earned him the J.League Iron Award, and in May of the same year he was named the competition's Monthly MVP.

The consistency did not translate into individual honours at the top table: despite his ever-present season, Kawahara was left out of the J.League Best XI for 2023. It did, though, make him an attractive target, and in 2024 he moved on to Kawasaki Frontale.

Kawahara's path to the professional game was unhurried. Born in Yamaga, in Kumamoto Prefecture, he progressed through local youth football before a spell at the JFA Academy Kumamoto Uki and Ohzu High School, only turning professional in his early twenties after university football. He has not featured for Japan at any level, senior or youth, and his career to date has been built on durability and reliability rather than trophies — he is yet to win a major team title.
