Joe Kadenge is the name still invoked whenever Ingwe wants to remind Nairobi who it is. He played through the years when the club, formed on 12 March 1964 as Abaluhya United from a merger of Luhya community sides in the city, was finding its identity — one it had to change in 1980, dropping the ethnic name for AFC Leopards after President Daniel arap Moi's government barred such labels in sport. The switch did nothing to slow the team down: twelve league titles followed across the decades, the run stretching from 1966 to 1998 and including back-to-back years in the early 1980s when Gor Mahia could rarely lay a glove on them. That rivalry, the Mashemeji Derby, still draws Nairobi in two directions every time the sides meet.

Ten FKF President's Cup wins and five CECAFA Club Cup triumphs sit alongside the league record, the silverware thinning out noticeably after the 1990s. Relegation arrived in 2008, and Leopards spent a season in the Nationwide League before winning their zone and coming straight back up in 2009. The finances never fully recovered: a FIFA transfer ban followed in March 2021 over unpaid dues to a former player, and in 2023 the club needed a government grant of five million Kenyan shillings just to clear wages owed to former players and coaches.

Nyayo National Stadium remains home, though squeezed capacity and away dates at Kasarani have pushed some fixtures elsewhere in recent seasons. Through it all, the name Kadenge is the one still mentioned first, the player whose game was carried down as folklore before it ever needed a highlights reel.
