The pull between Almería and the clubs of the wider Andalusian coast has never had the weight of a derby with a century behind it. The version that exists now was assembled to fix that — founded on 26 July 1989 as Almería Club de Fútbol, then merged in 2001 with Polideportivo Almería and renamed.

Promotion came the way it usually does for clubs building from nothing: in stages. The Tercera División title in 1992/93, then Segunda B in 2001/02, then second place in the Segunda in 2006/07 and a first season in La Liga. That first year up produced the best finish the club has managed, eighth in 2007/08.

What followed was movement rather than settlement — up through the play-offs in 2013, down again, up as champions of the Segunda in 2021/22, down again in 2024. The Rojiblancos play at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.

Ownership has changed twice in six years. Turki Al-Sheikh bought the club in 2019 for €20m; a Saudi consortium led by Mohammed Al-Kereiji took over in 2025, and in 2026 Cristiano Ronaldo's CR7 Sports Investments took 25%.
