The club began life as the team of the Rwandese Patriotic Front's army, taking the field on 1 June 1993, and it has stayed close to that institutional backbone ever since, even as the country around it changed completely.
What sets APR apart from every other side in Rwanda is simple persistence: 24 league titles, a run that stretches from the mid-1990s through to the current campaign, with barely a gap of more than a season or two between championships.
Beyond Rwanda's borders the record is more modest but not without moments — a run to the semi-finals of the CAF Cup Winners' Cup in 2003 remains the club's high-water mark continentally, with later Champions League campaigns in 2022 and 2023 both ending in the second round. Domestically, none of that has ever been in doubt for long.
