Gor Mahia

Kasarani, properly the Moi International Sports Centre, was built on the northern edge of Nairobi, and its 48,063 seats make it the largest ground Gor Mahia has ever called home. The club spent its early decades at City Stadium, since renamed Joe Kadenge Stadium.

The club took its shape in a room arranged by a politician. Luo Union FC, founded in the 1950s at the instigation of the independence campaigner Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, won the first Kenyan championship in 1964, then was thrown out of the league in 1966 and split. Tom Mboya, then a government minister, brought the factions to the table, and on 17 February 1968 Luo Union and Luo Sports Club merged. Gor Mahia won the title in its first season and went into the African Cup of Champions Clubs the following year. Mboya was assassinated in 1969; an attempt to rename the club Luo Union came and went, and the name Gor Mahia stayed.

The nickname Sirkal , Swahili for government, dates from those years and the ministers who backed the team.

Of 22 league titles, the one that travels furthest is not a league title at all. In 1987 Gor Mahia won the African Cup Winners' Cup, and no other Kenyan club has taken a continental trophy since.

AFC Leopards have been the opposition since the merger year.
