The club began life in 1988 as Bangkok University Football Club, fielding a side for the university's Rangsit Campus. Football Association of Thailand rules forcing top-division clubs to incorporate as companies pushed a rename to Bangkok United in 2009, done in partnership with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. True Corporation bought the club the following year and has owned it since, which is why the shirt now reads True Bangkok United.

The one Thai League 1 championship still on the books dates back to 2006, won as Bangkok University; the club's Thai League 2 title came in 2002–03.
