The Bab Jedid quarter of Tunis produced the club in 1920, when it grew out of Stade Africain, founded five years earlier. Under the French protectorate, its founders chose red and white for the Tunisian flag and refused to hand the running of the club to colonial administrators, an insistence on Tunisian control that shaped how the club was seen from its first seasons.

Fourteen league titles have followed, along with thirteen Tunisian Cups, but 1991 stands apart: Club Africain beat Uganda's Villa SC 7–3 on aggregate to become the first Tunisian side to win the African Cup of Champions Clubs. The following season they went further still, taking the league, the domestic cup, the continental title and the Afro-Asian Club Championship against Al-Hilal in the same campaign, a quadruple no Tunisian rival has matched. Success continued more intermittently after that, in the Arab Champions League in 1997 and twice in the UNAF Cup of Champions Clubs.

Between 1997 and 2007, supporters call the decade the "Années noires", the Dark Years, a stretch without the honours the club had grown used to. Slim Riahi's presidency from 2012 brought the club back into contention, and the title returned again in 2025–26.

None of it means as much in Tunis as the Derby Tunisien against Espérance, the fixture that decides bragging rights in the capital regardless of where either club stands in the table that season. Étoile du Sahel and CS Sfaxien complete the list of rivalries that matter.

Ask supporters to name one player and most will say Radhi Jaïdi, the defender who captained the side through the leanest years and stayed the reference point for what the club expects of a Tunisian international wearing red and white.
