It took years to show: the team lost its first international outing, at the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games in Kingston, and by its first Olympics, in 1972, it was still finishing sixth.

What followed, through the 1990s into 2000, was as complete a run of dominance as women's volleyball has seen: three straight Olympic titles in 1992, 1996 and 2000, two more world titles, four World Cups, and a shelf of NORCECA and Pan American gold to go with them. The nickname stuck during that stretch — Las Espectaculares Morenas del Caribe, the Spectacular Brunettes of the Caribbean.

They play their home matches at the Coliseo de la Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, though the identity of this side was never really about the building. Regla Torres won Olympic gold at seventeen and was still there for the third, in 2000, when she was named the tournament's most valuable player.
