Etar Veliko Tarnovo

In the spring of 1991 Etar won the Bulgarian championship, and the following season took the club into the European Cup against Kaiserslautern. Angel Chervenkov scored there — still the only Champions Cup goal in the club's history. Georgi Vasilev, who managed the side from 1987 to 1992, had built that team; the same year it added the Bulgarian Cup, and in 1995 the Intertoto Cup followed, along with a League Cup won 3:0 against Dunav in the final.

That was the original Etar, founded on 24 April 1924 out of a merger of six clubs in Veliko Tarnovo. It went further in Europe in 1985/86, reaching a Cup Winners' Cup semi-final against Atlético Madrid, and it was dissolved in 2003 when the money ran out. What exists now dates from 2013, when the licence of Botev Debelets was bought and the name brought back.

The rebuilt club worked its way up in the way such clubs do: the third division in 2015/16, the second the season after. Krasimir Balakov, who played for Etar between 1983 and 1990, came back as manager in 2018 and stayed a season.

The fixture that still matters most is against Beroe from Stara Zagora, known locally as the klasika. Home matches are played at the Ivaylo Stadium.
