The senior side earned the name Breisgau Brazilians in the 1990s, under Volker Finke, for a technical, forward-leaning style.

Six wins in the DFB-Pokal der Junioren make Freiburg the record holder in the competition. Three of the six went to penalties: Borussia Dortmund in 2009, beaten 6–5 from the spot after a 2–2 draw; Hansa Rostock two years later; then Schalke 04 in 2014, held at 1–1 and seen off 7–6. Karlsruher SC were the opponents in the first of the six, in 2006. The 2008 German under-19 championship stands alone in the club's record.
Oliver Baumann was in goal for the 2008 championship squad; Kevin Schade and Noah Atubolu both arrived in 2018.
