Gomora United FC

Second place in the SAFA Second Division's Gauteng Stream did not look like a promotion place until Highlands Park were docked 62 points for fielding a player on fraudulent papers. That ruling lifted Gomora United, who had finished the campaign on 74 points, to the top of the standings and out of the division. The bigger prize followed in the same 2024–25 season, when the club went through the ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs, beating African Warriors 3–0, Midlands Wanderers 1–0 and, in the final, The Bees FC 2–1 with goals from Xola "Shebe" Mosiea and Moses "Jomo" Mokasi. That result, under coach Johnny Ferreira, sent Gomora into the Motsepe Foundation Championship for 2025–26, South Africa's second tier.

The club carries the name of Alexandra, the Gauteng township it grew out of in 2020, though it has not always been able to play there: fixtures have been staged at TUT Stadium in Pretoria, and Gomora have also applied to play matches in Limpopo rather than at home, a workaround forced by limited resources rather than choice.

Among those who took the club up, Rooi Mahamutsa, a defender who came through Orlando Pirates, gave the squad a level of pedigree unusual for a team so recently formed, alongside winger Roger Majafa and assistant coach Patrick Phungwayo.

None of that history has produced a fixture anyone calls a derby. What Gomora have instead is Philly's Games, a local tournament where they turn out against Alexandra neighbours Isithembiso FC, Rebels FC and Mambas FC — rivalries built on proximity rather than history, for now.
