Stefaans Basie founded the club in the 1980s and still runs it as owner and chairman. Hungry Lions did not enter organised league competition until around 2000.
Promotion, when it came, followed a clear run: back-to-back wins in the SAFA Second Division's Northern Cape Stream A in 2017–18 and 2018–19, and the 2020–21 SAFA Second Division National Third Tier title took them up to the National First Division, the second tier of the domestic game.
Setswana speakers know them by their own name for themselves, Di Tau Dia Rora, the Hungry Lions, in red and black.
