Apostolos Oikonomou has spent recent seasons rebuilding the Greek women's side around a squad better known at home than abroad. When the federation needs its biggest stage, it turns to the O.A.C.A.

Turkey has been the measure of this rivalry since 1966, when the two sides met for the first time in Istanbul and Greece lost both matches 3–0. At the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almería, Greece took silver behind Turkey, and it did so again in 2018 in Tarragona, this time finishing behind Croatia.

The federation governing the side, the Hellenic Volleyball Federation, dates to 1970, when volleyball split from basketball into its own body; the national team's own results only begin appearing in the record from the 1985 European Championship, where it placed twelfth. At the 2026 European Championship, Greece beat France 3-0 in the round of 16 before falling to Serbia in the quarterfinals.
