Millwall

Millwall supporters have carried the line "no one likes us, we don't care" as a badge for decades, and the club's own away record explains why the phrase stuck: a following raised on hostility from Upton Park to Selhurst Park, and proud of it. The rivalry with West Ham United goes back to the docks themselves — the Dockers Derby, one of the oldest grudges in English football, forged before Millwall ever crossed the river to New Cross. That move happened in 1910, when a club founded twenty-five years earlier by workers at the J.T. Morton cannery on the Isle of Dogs, then playing as Millwall Rovers and later Millwall Athletic, settled into The Den and shortened its name to the one it carries now.

Domestic silverware has never included the top flight or the FA Cup itself, only a run to the final in 2003–04 under Dennis Wise, a former Chelsea captain who arrived as player-manager and took the club further than it had ever gone in the competition. The honours that do sit in the cabinet belong to lower divisions and earlier eras — Southern League titles in the 1890s, promotions and Third Division South championships either side of the war, a Fourth Division title in 1962 — the kind of history built one promotion at a time rather than around a single golden generation.

Ask who Millwall is, though, and the answer at The Den is still Neil Harris. He scored 138 goals across two spells at the club, more than anyone else in its history, then stayed on to manage it. Before him there was Teddy Sheringham, a Millwall academy product who scored 37 goals in the 1988–89 season, a club record that stood until 2007, before West Ham, Tottenham and England carried his name elsewhere. Harris never left in the same way. He is the one Millwall still measures itself against.
