Millwall saw off Norwich City 3-0 in the Championship regular season on Saturday, a result that strengthened their position near the middle of the table while leaving the visitors rooted to the bottom. Tairyk Arconte took centre stage with two goals, and a second-half red card for José Córdoba saw the visitors down to ten men for the final quarter of the game. By then, the contest had already been settled on the pitch.
Arconte opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing a well-worked move to give Millwall an early advantage. The visitors' frustration showed in the form of a booking for Córdoba just seven minutes before half-time, and Jenson Metcalfe joined him on the book for Millwall in the 40th. The visitors made three changes at the break — Ben Slimane, Field and Fisher — but could not arrest the momentum.
Arconte doubled his tally in the 58th minute and turned the game into a formality. Córdoba's second yellow card in the 64th minute effectively ended Norwich's hopes, and the visitors were reduced to ten men with a quarter of the match remaining. Millwall made their own changes, bringing on Arconte himself in the 71st minute. Cundle added a third in the 84th, closing out a comprehensive display.
Millwall's statistics told the story of their control. They created five big chances against one for Norwich, and their 2.69 expected goals compared with 1.02 for the visitors reflected the quality of opportunities on offer. Seven shots on target to two, and a 52 per cent possession share — the numbers confirmed what the eye had seen.
The result leaves Millwall on six points in 10th place after four games, a position they can build on. Norwich remain bottom with three points from four matches, and the red card will add to their concerns. Three points and a clean sheet is a solid start, but there is work to be done if they want to climb.
