Estadio Manuel Felipe Carrera holds 9,775 people under its official capacity, though Municipal has listed room for up to 12,000 when the league table demands it.

The club itself began among municipal workers, registered in 1936 as CSD Ayuntamiento Arturo Bickford, after the mayor of the day. The name settled into Municipal later.

Whatever the club has become since traces back most directly to Juan Carlos Plata, known simply as El Pin, who played nowhere else from 1988 to 2010 and finished with 376 goals in 511 appearances, the highest total in the club's history. He scored for the national team too, 35 times in 87 caps, but it was the two decades in red that defined him.

Across town sits Comunicaciones, and the fixture between the two has run since 1951, over 330 meetings deep by 2025, with Comunicaciones still marginally ahead in the head-to-head. Municipal's one continental peak came in 1974, when it lifted the CONCACAF Champions' Cup and then went on to lose the Copa Interamericana final to Independiente on penalties, a near miss that still gets mentioned before the trophies that followed.

Domestically there has been little competition. Municipal has claimed the Liga Nacional title 33 times, most recently in the Clausura 2026 tournament.
