Three times the Reign have finished a National Women's Soccer League season top of the table. The third Shield arrived in 2022. The following autumn the club reached another final and lost that one too, to Kansas City Current.

The team was put together in November 2012 as one of the league's founding members, and it has spent much of the time since answering to different names. Seattle Reign FC through to 2018, then a move down the road to Tacoma and a shortened Reign FC. When the French group OL Groupe took majority control in 2020 the name changed again, to OL Reign. The return to Seattle came in 2022, and in January 2024 the club went back to what it was called at the start.

Home is Lumen Field, an American football ground that seats around 68,740 and is closed off to roughly 10,000 for NWSL matches, with room to open up when a fixture demands it. Portland Thorns FC visiting is one of those fixtures — the Cascadia Clash.

Lauren Barnes has played 280 matches for the club, more than anyone, and Jess Fishlock is not far behind on 242. But the player identified with the Reign beyond Seattle is Megan Rapinoe, captain, 55 goals in 132 appearances.
