For almost seventy years the stadium answered to one name: Santiago Bernabéu, adopted in 1955. That link ended in 2025, when the rebuilt ground was renamed simply the Bernabéu, a change made for commercial reasons. The rebuild itself, finished in 2024, cost roughly €1.76bn; it added a retractable roof and a new pitch and lifted capacity to 83,186. Before 1955 the ground had been Nuevo Chamartín, the name it carried from 1947.

Real Madrid plays in white, which is where both common nicknames come from: Los Blancos and Los Merengues. A third, Los Vikingos, circulates less often.

No club has won the European Cup or Champions League more often. Real Madrid took the first five editions outright, 1956 to 1960, a run no one has matched since. From 1998 the club added nine more titles, most recently in 2024. At home, the record reads 36 La Liga titles, the most recent also in 2024.

Two fixtures carry their own names: matches against Atlético Madrid form the Madrid derby, known in Spanish as el Derbi madrileño; those against Barcelona are El Clásico.
