In their first season in USL Pro, 2014, Sacramento Republic beat Harrisburg City Islanders 2–0 in the final and took the championship, having already finished top of the Western Conference regular season. They won that regular-season title a second time in 2023.

The club was put together in 2012 and needed two years to reach competition. Its colours were chosen to sit inside California's own iconography: Old Glory Red, Maple and Eggshell, drawn from the state's Bear Flag. The nickname followed the same logic — The Quails , after the California quail, the state bird. Supporters also use the plainer Republic.
