San Fernando CD

In August 2025, San Fernando CD failed to register for the Tercera Federación and simply ceased to exist. It was the second time the city had lost its club that way: the original Club Deportivo San Fernando, formed in 1940 from a merger of San Fernando FC, Atlético San Fernando and CD Arsenal, folded in 2009 under debt, and what carried the name for the following sixteen years was in fact a replacement built on the sporting rights of Unión Sporting, starting again from the regional leagues. Within months of the second collapse, a new club, CD San Fernando 1940, was set up to take up the identity once more, with Monchi — the former Sevilla and Aston Villa sporting director, born in the city — installed as president.

The 2009 entity never reached the heights of the club it replaced. Its best moments were near misses: runner-up in Segunda División B in 2020–21, which was enough for promotion to Primera Federación, and two second-place finishes in Tercera División at the start of the 2010s. The older club had gone further, spending ten straight seasons in Segunda División through the 1950s and into the 1960s, with Rafael "Mendi" Flores among the players remembered from that run.

Blue and white have stayed constant through both incarnations, as has the ground, the Estadio Iberoamericano Bahía Sur, which holds 6,471. The rivalry with Cádiz CF, played out as the Derbi de la Bahía, has outlasted the club's own legal existence.

What plays under the San Fernando name now is CD San Fernando 1940, rebuilding from the bottom of the pyramid with Monchi's name attached to it and the old identity to defend.
