Singapore U20

Matches against Malaysia carry the weight of geography and old rivalry, and even at under-20 level the fixture is spoken of as a derby, though no separate name for the age-group meeting has taken hold.

The team as it now stands dates only to March 2017, when Fandi Ahmad took charge and the Football Association of Singapore split the age group out from the old U19/U21/U23 arrangement. Before that, players who would now wear the U20 shirt were simply absorbed into whichever bracket fitted. The setup exists to carry players from the National Football Academy through to the Young Lions, currently coached by Firdaus Kassim.

The nickname "The Cubs" belongs properly to 2010, when the squad took bronze at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Regionally, third place at the 2003 AFF U-19 Youth Championship stands as the best finish, and further back, fourth place at the 1967 AFC Youth Championship remains the highest finish at the continental event. Since then, qualification campaigns for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup have ended at the group stage each time.

There is no fixed home ground. Training and closed-door games are held at Kallang Football Hub, while matches that need paying spectators move to Jalan Besar Stadium, holding 6,500, or, for the rare occasion demanding more, the National Stadium.
