Malta's oldest football rivalry runs through the Sliema derby against Floriana. Sliema Wanderers were founded on 3 November 1909, one of the sides present at the very first Maltese league championship that same season, and the club has been chasing and winning silverware ever since. The nickname "The Blues" comes straight from the colours; less obvious is "tax-Xelin", a tag dating to the shilling, the British coin still in use on the island before the euro.
Twenty-six league championships put Sliema among the game's most decorated Maltese clubs, spread across decades rather than concentrated in one golden run. Twenty Maltese FA Trophy wins sit alongside that record.
