Kostanay's football identity runs through one name, Tobol, and its second team exists mostly in the senior side's shadow — built to carry academy players toward the first team's yellow and green rather than to chase results of its own. In 2026 it plays in Kazakhstan's First League, a level below the club that gives it its name.

The name itself has moved more than once. The side played as Tobol-2 in the First League in 2006 and 2007, spent 2008 to 2015 as Tobol Dubl in the national reserve championship, turned briefly into Tobol U-21 in 2016, and has gone by Tobol-M since 2017, though some older aggregators still list it under its original name. It has never had its own registration — the team is run under the parent club's foundation — and no one has settled on when it actually began. One source traces a reserve squad back to 1999; the earliest confirmed appearance under the Tobol-2 name is 2006.

Between 2021 and 2024, playing in the Second League, it took its home matches to the Zatobolets stadium in the nearby village of Zatobolsk, a 2,000-seat ground. The return to the First League for 2026 moved fixtures into Kostanay itself, to the Tobyl Arena, while the first team continues to play its own games at the 9,700-seat Central Stadium.

Its strongest football came under the reserve-championship banner: three straight titles between 2008 and 2010, then bronze in 2015. As Tobol U-21, under coach Oleg Lotov, it took silver in the Second League in 2016. The First League record reads thinner — 11th place in both 2006 and 2007, and bottom of the table, 14th, in 2026. With no other Kostanay-region side at this level, there is no fixture carrying old rivalry; every match is against another club's reserves.

The name worth remembering from its ranks belongs to someone who moved on from it. Zhaslan Zhumashev came through the reserve side before earning caps for Kazakhstan's national team, which is the clearest measure of what the second team is actually for.
