Tusker

Robert Matano's name sits at the centre of the club's modern run: he had played for the club long before that.

The name on the shirt arrived through beer. The side began in 1969 as Kenya Breweries FC, the works team of a brewery, and became Tusker FC in 1999 when East African Breweries put the name of its lager on the club. The nickname stayed literal: The Brewers, in yellow and black.

The most successful stretch belongs to the last five years. Tusker won the league in 2020–21 and again in 2021–22, taking the club to 13 Kenyan titles. Beyond Kenya they were a regional force earlier: five CECAFA Club Cups, the first two in 1988 and 1989, then a pair either side of the millennium in 2000 and 2001. In 1994, still under the Breweries name, they reached the final of the African Cup Winners' Cup and lost it to Daring Club Motema Pembe.

Ruaraka Stadium holds 4,000, which is small for a club of this record, and Tusker regularly take home matches to Kinoru Stadium in Meru, some 200 kilometres from Nairobi.

The fixture that matters is Gor Mahia. Both clubs are from Nairobi, both have spent decades collecting the same trophies, and the derby between them is the one that fills grounds Tusker's own ground could not. The history between them adds an edge that the league table alone does not explain.
