Ujpest

Újpest sits on the northern edge of Budapest, a district that grew up around textile mills and rail yards rather than the grand avenues of Pest, and the football club took its identity from that ground before it took a name. It began as a gymnastics society, Újpesti Torna Egylet, set up by a schoolteacher, János Goll, with a football section following at the end of 1899 and folding into the main club two years later.

The name did not stay fixed. Under communist rule the club was handed to the police and renamed after György Dózsa, the leader of a 16th-century peasant revolt, a label it carried through the 1950s. After 1956 the authorities allowed "Újpesti" back onto the shirt, and only with the fall of communism in 1990 did the original Torna Egylet name return, settling into its current form, Újpest FC, in 1998.

Through those changes of name the results held steady. Újpest have taken the Hungarian league 20 times, with a run of six titles between 1970 and 1975 that still marks the club's peak, and added 11 domestic cups. They play in violet and white, and their fixture against Ferencváros is known simply as the Budapest derby — a rivalry kept distinct from the Örökrangadó, the older contest between Ferencváros and MTK.

Home games are played at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion, a ground of 12,670 seats that once went by a plainer name, Megyeri úti, before it was renamed for Ferenc Szusza. No trophy count says as much about what the club values as the fact that its stadium carries a person's name rather than a sponsor's.
