«The White Castle»
Giza sits across the river from central Cairo, and for more than a century the district has organised part of its identity around one football club. Zamalek grew out of that ground before the name settled: registered first, then renamed Mokhtalat, then Farouk I, and only in 1952, after the revolution that ended the monarchy, did it become Zamalek SC. The all-white kit gave it the nickname "The White Castle," and the technical, patient style the club cultivated through its youth setup earned it another one, less common outside Egypt — the "School of Art and Engineering."
That style produced continental success on a scale few African clubs can claim: five CAF Champions League titles, the last in 2002, and two CAF Confederation Cups, the second arriving in 2024 after a fifteen-year gap since the first. At home, 15 Egyptian Premier League titles and 29 Egypt Cups sit behind a rivalry that overshadows most of it — the Cairo Derby against Al Ahly, a fixture that decides bragging rights across the whole city rather than just the league table.
Hossam Hassan remains the name supporters reach for first, a striker who later returned to manage the club he had scored for. The academy that shaped him is the same one people mean when they invoke the "School of Art and Engineering" line, and it is why Zamalek's identity has stayed tied to production rather than purchase.
Matches are played at the Cairo International Stadium, a ground shared rather than owned, where 75,000 seats fill fastest whenever the derby is on the calendar.
