Aflitos gets its name from the district that surrounds it. A pitch had stood on the site since 1917; the stands went up around it and opened with a derby, Náutico beating Sport 5-2.

The club left for over four years starting in 2013, came back in 2018 after a rebuild that replaced the turf, dressing rooms, floodlights and perimeter fencing, and reopened with a friendly win over Argentina's Newell's Old Boys. Capacity has moved with each inspection since — the fire service cleared it for 16,000 in 2022, and the figure has crept toward 18,700 more recently.

The record crowd dates back further, to a 1970 derby against Santa Cruz in the Campeonato Pernambucano, won 1-0 in front of just over 31,000 people, a tally the current stands could not accommodate today. Aflitos has also hosted a pair of international friendlies from the 1950s, against Vélez Sarsfield and Sporting, though it has never staged a national cup final.

The surface has drawn complaints in recent seasons — and pitch invasions have become something of a pattern here, with supporters spilling onto the field after big wins in 2014, 2022 and 2024. With Náutico back in Série B, further work to bring the stadium up to CBF standard is expected.
