Nautilus Recife secured a narrow 1:0 victory over Ceará at Estadio dos Afogados in the twenty-third round of Brazil's Serie B. The result leaves the hosts in ninth place on 37 points while Ceará remain seventeenth with 28 points after 25 matches. Derek appeared to open the scoring in the thirty-eighth minute but the goal was cancelled by VAR, so the decisive moment came just before half-time.
Leo Indio's effort in the forty-fifth minute plus two proved to be the difference. Recife had built pressure throughout the first half, creating three big chances to Ceará's two, and the goal finally arrived in stoppage time. The hosts dominated possession at 51 per cent and registered fourteen shots on target compared with four for the visitors.
Ceará struggled to test Recife's goalkeeper, who made only three saves. The visitors managed twelve saves of their own against Recife's attacking output, which carried an expected goals tally of 2.64. Recife's shot accuracy of 47 per cent meant that many efforts found the back of the net, but only one carried the weight of the match.
The game turned into a physical affair in the second half. Referee issued six yellow cards to Recife and one to Ceará, with disciplinary problems mounting as the match progressed. Reginaldo, Caio, Matheus Araujo, Daniel Paulista, Wanderson and Jean Carlos all received bookings for the hosts.
Recife made three changes at the break, bringing on Richard, Lucca and R. Ramos. They added Melk in the sixty-second minute and Julio Cesar late on, while Ceará introduced Ryan Carlos and B. Borasi in the sixty-sixth minute before substituting Derek in the seventy-first.
The result extends Recife's recent run of results without defeat. They had drawn 1:1 with Ponte Preta and Atlético Goianiense, followed by a goalless draw against Cracau before beating Londrina 2:1. Ceará's form has been more erratic, including a heavy 1:3 defeat to Cuiabá and a 4:3 victory over São Bernardo.
Recife's dominance in aerial duels and attacking play did not translate into a comfortable margin. They completed 297 passes in the opposition half while Ceará managed 240, but the visitors created fewer clear-cut opportunities. The single goal decided a match where Recife should have taken more points from their chances.
