O2 Arena

The OVO Hydro is a low and functional building in Pacific Quay, a utilitarian block that serves the city without asking for attention.

The facility operates with a different rhythm than the football grounds. The surface shifts. A hardwood floor laid out for a basketball tournament gives way to ice for a hockey match, and then to a stage for a concert. The capacity adjusts with the layout, sitting around twelve thousand five hundred when configured for sport, swelling for a major event. The metalwork holding the roof is tight and efficient, designed for function rather than spectacle.

Inside, the seating rises steeply around the central floor, bringing the crowd close to the action regardless of the sport. The lighting rigs are permanent fixtures, ready to flood the space with colour for a show or keep it bright for a championship. The acoustics are controlled, dampening the roar of the crowd more effectively than the open-air grounds nearby.

The building opened in 2013 as part of the infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games, a purpose-built solution for a specific era of the city's sporting calendar. It hosted the gymnastics world championships shortly after, a test of its rigidity and safety. While the London O2 hosts the big fights and the larger concerts, this arena serves the local community and the visiting teams that play in the Scottish Professional Hockey League. It is a working venue, not a monument.
