PalaLottomatica
Rome, Italy
It was built for the 1960 Summer Olympics, though the opening date is disputed—June or August, sources disagree. The architect was Marcello Piacentini, with structural work by Pier Luigi Nervi. The building has survived a renovation between 1999 and 2003 paid for by Lottomatica, which added acoustic improvements and night lighting.
Inside, the parquet floor is clearly visible in photographs from basketball matches.
It was the home of Pallacanestro Virtus Roma across three separate periods, with gaps between each. The last spell ended in 2020. A WWE show took place there in November 2008.
The attendance record for a sporting event came at the 2005 Men's European Volleyball Championship Final on 11 September, when 14,530 spectators squeezed inside—a figure that exceeds the stated capacity of 11,200. The building has hosted concerts too; Depeche Mode have played here multiple times since 1987. During a Lou Reed gig in 1975, the show was cancelled after police clashed with protesters over ticket prices, and the interior was damaged.
