Schlosswallhalle

Osnabrück, Germany

Formerly: Sporthalle am Schloßwall

The Schlosswallhalle sits on Schloßwall 10 in Osnabrück. The city architect Emil Hackländer raised the first structure in 1873, opening it to the public in October of that year. It served the town until the war leveled it. The reconstruction finished in 1953, and the hall returned to its civic duties as a multi-purpose venue.

The interior floor is a standard indoor surface, though the exact material remains unspecified in the records. The space holds 1,400 people today, a figure that reflects the current layout. During the 1950s and 60s, the capacity reached 2,200, a number set when VfL Osnabrück’s men’s basketball team occupied the top division. The hall has since scaled back to accommodate the modern tenants: BBC Black Bulls Osnabrück and Volleyball Club Osnabrück.

The building’s most unusual chapter began in December 2020. As the pandemic tightened its grip, the hall converted into a vaccination centre. It operated in that role until October 2021. Before that, the hall hosted the 1982 Men’s Handball World Championship and the 1966 German Table Tennis Championship. It also hosts the annual Addi-Vetter-Cup indoor football tournament.

The City of Osnabrück owns the building. There is no dedicated site for the hall; details reside on the municipal portal. The venue has weathered a century of changes, from the original 19th-century construction to the modern administrative shifts of the 21st century.
